Who We Are

Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Western Securities is a private, fully-integrated real estate holding, property management, and development company. Originally incorporated in 1932 by the late John J. O’Connor, Western Securities proudly remains family-owned and operated spanning four generations.

In 1977, Western Securities expanded its operations to include major U.S. markets and continues to seek unique and promising North American real estate opportunities.

As a diversified commercial and residential real estate operation, Western Securities and its affiliates demonstrate a history of success with our long-term perspective and diversification of assets. Our varied holdings include farm and ranch lands; single and multi-family homes; hotels; assisted living facilities; commercial properties; mixed-use projects; and open-air and enclosed shopping centres.

Our Approach

When it comes to real estate, long-term planning and reinvesting in our assets is our model. We are not merchant builders who rely on the sale of a project for profit. Our approach is to purchase, build, manage, and redevelop real estate with a long-term investment perspective. Making sure we are good stewards to our properties and neighbourhoods in which they reside, managing our assets efficiently, and investing where it matters is how we create long-term value in our real estate.

Management is Key

We pride ourselves in being exceptional managers of our assets. We do not focus on the management of the properties as a core profit centre for our business; instead, our management approach is caring for our properties in a strategic way to increase their value as each asset’s strength is important to our overall portfolio. This is why we manage all our properties in North America with only a few exceptions.

To us, being a great manager involves many aspects:

  • Looking after our properties both efficiently and with a long-term perspective.
  • Treating our tenants like our business partners as they represent the front line of our business and are essential to the ongoing success of our assets.
  • Investing in the assets where it matters most—long-term efficiencies.
  • Implementing preventative maintenance programs to maximize resources and minimize surprises.
  • Empowering our people to make decisions and effectively communicate internally and externally to ensure we are available and responsive to our stakeholders’ and tenants’ needs.

Our fundamental management focus is quality control over our asset portfolio. This has been the core of our business for 90 years and is what continues to differentiate us from the competition.
